Given Imaging Announces Highlights of Third Annual International Conference on Capsule Endoscopy

Studies using Given's M2A showed higher prevalence of small bowel tumors

Initial results reported on new M2A Esophageal Capsule

(Nasdaq: GIVN) announced highlights from the Third International Conference on Capsule Endoscopy (ICCE) that concluded today in Miami, Florida. 90 presentations and posters were included in the program that was attended by over 300 participants from 30 countries. Presenters reported that Given Imaging's M2A Capsule Endoscope revealed higher incidence rates of small bowel tumors than previously reported.

“Our goal for this year's ICCE was to foster discussion and build consensus among the world leaders in Capsule Endoscopy,” said David Fleischer, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. “In addition, this is a wonderful forum to review initial trial results of new products such as the esophageal capsule and patency system.”

Other topics covered included:

• Crohn's disease
  A number of clinical studies concluded that M2A Capsule Endoscopy should be the first-line examination in patients with suspected small bowel Crohn's disease.
  
  An economic outcomes study was presented by the Institute of Medical Outcomes Research (IMOR) showing that using the M2A Capsule Endoscopy as a first-line diagnostic tool is cost-saving from the perspective of a third party payer.
• Small Bowel Tumors
  Studies in a total of more than 700 patients that were referred for small bowel bleeding and other small bowel pathology showed a 6 - 9% range of incidence of small bowel tumors. This is significantly higher than previously thought.
• Future Products
  Results of a feasibility study led by investigators from the Ramban Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, comparing Esophageal Capsule Endoscopy (ECE) to traditional endoscopy in 17 patients show ECE to be a convenient, patient-friendly and sensitive method for visualization of esophageal disorders and may provide an effective method to screen patients with GERD symptoms for Barrett's Esophagus.
  
  A 61 patient, multi-center study determined that the Given Patency System is an effective tool for verifying GI patency and investigating small bowel strictures in Crohn's patients.
