Given Imaging's M2A to be Reimbursed by Three New Payors
First policy covering suspected Crohn’s disease and small bowel tumors issued
1/21/2003 - ATLANTA GA -- Given Imaging (NASDAQ:GIVN) announced today that three new payors, Blue Cross of California, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Medicare and HGSAdministrators which is Highmark of Pennsylvania’s government business unit, have established coverage policies for the M2A capsule endoscope. HGSAdministrators’ policy is the first to also cover the M2A procedure for patients who demonstrate symptoms of Crohn’s disease or small bowel tumors that can not be confirmed by other methods.
"These new policies and recent CMS decisions at the national level reflect the momentum capsule endoscopy is gaining in expanding reimbursement coverage," said Gavriel D. Meron, President and CEO of Given Imaging. "Allowing doctors to use capsule endoscopy to diagnose suspected Crohn’s disease can lead to earlier treatment for this difficult to diagnose condition, thus reducing unwarranted suffering for patients and costs to payors."
Blue Cross of California and its California affiliates have more than 6.8 million members. HGSAdministrators serves approximately 2 million Pennsylvanians with Medicare coverage and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Medicare serves approximately 150,000 beneficiaries. These additional 9 million beneficiaries bring to approximately 47 million the total number of Americans who have reimbursable access to capsule endoscopy.
