Study Shows Superiority of Capsule Endoscopy for Evaluating Small Bowel Disease
1/9/2003 - YOQNEAM, Israel -- Given Imaging Ltd. (NASDAQ: GIVN) announced today the publication of a prospective trial comparing small bowel follow through with video capsule endoscopy for suspected small bowel disease, published in the October issue of Gastroenterology (October 2002, Volume 123 Number 4). The study concludes that video capsule endoscopy was found to be superior to small bowel radiograph for the evaluation of small bowel diseases. The study was conducted by Dr. Guido Costamagna, Head -- Digestive Endoscopy Unit, Department of Surgery, Rome Catholic Hospital, Rome, Italy.
"Capsule endoscopy is an attractive pain-free endoscopy technique, and is a giant leap in the investigational approach of small bowel disorders. Capsule Endoscopy has the potential to become the first choice investigation for small bowel disorders," said Professor Guido Costamagna.
The study compared twenty patients with suspected small bowel disease and results of barium follow-through and the Given M2A capsule were compared. Barium follow through was normal or showed no diagnosis in 17 patients and showed a positive diagnosis in 3 patients. Capsule endoscopy was normal in 3 patients and showed a positive diagnosis in 17 patients. As a result of the study, patients were positively diagnosed having diseases such as small bowel polyps, suspected Crohn’s disease and sites of obscure bleeding.
